A brief history of boatbuilding in our nation's oldest port. the earliest watercraft in america, two prehistoric dugout canoes radiocarbon dated to around 6000 years ago, are from the submerged site of deleon springs in florida, not too far from st. augustine.. Ship construction techniques can be categorized as one of hide, log, sewn, lashed-plank, clinker (and reverse-clinker), shell-first, and frame-first. while the frame-first technique dominates the modern ship construction industry , the ancients relied primarily on the other techniques to build their watercraft.. Bringing history to life through boatbuilding by josh anderson. in a few weeks’ time, the center for wooden boats (cwb) will be offering the first in an ongoing series of classes building the john winslow 1920 designed kitten class sloop. this class series is an experimental model for us and will take place in the brand new and very spacious bill garden boatshop within the wagner education.
